Motherled Care Manifesto
1. Care is best provided by a team, of which the woman is the leader.
In order to make the best choices for her family, she will gather a team around her that will help her gather the information she needs to make a well-informed decision. The woman retains control of decision-making and consults with additional providers when needed.
2. The provider’s role is to provide balanced, evidence-based information.
Rather than resort to fear tactics, the provider can provide balanced, evidence-based information to help the client make the best choice for her family. The provider acknowledges that they do not know the best choice for the client as every family and situation is unique.
3. Women should be trusted and supported when making educated decisions about their care. When a decision is made about her pregnancy, birth, or any aspect of her care, it should be met with respect and understanding. We understand that as providers we don’t know what each client needs but we can be a supportive guide on her path.
4. Care can be empowering and provided with kindness.
Allow a relationship of trust to develop that brings about honest questions and honest answers. How better to empower the client then by being authentic provider - not judging or criticizing but simply caring about her as an individual and allowing compassion to follow.
